Episode 3: Three Centers of Intelligence – The Heart Center
In this episode, your hosts Lee and Caryn are expanding into "The Heart Center." This feeling group, which is home to Enneagram Types 2, 3, and 4, is also referred to as the "Shame Triad." A need for recognition and connection drives those who live in the Heart Center. They crave intimacy and love from others and, when they do not feel this connection, can experience deep guilt and shame, believing themselves somehow flawed and undeserving. We hope you enjoy this week's banter episode because we share an abundance of anecdotes!
Type 2s outwardly direct their feelings towards others. They are highly empathetic and caring, trying to earn the affection of others to avoid shame. This desire to meet others’ needs can distort their awareness of their own needs and emotions.
Type 3s can be out of touch with their feelings, especially their shame. They crave validation from others to feel secure in their own self-worth. Through accomplishment, threes project an image of success that masks a feeling of guilt and shame that lives within.
Type 4s internalizes their shame and uses it as a form of identity. While in touch with their emotions, they may dramatize their feelings to gather the attention of others and avoid deeper feelings of inadequacy. When they don’t get the attention desired, Fours feel a deep sense of deficiency, shame, and emptiness.
In this three-episode series, we'll break down how each of the Centers of Intelligence teaches us about our habitual responses or how we filter information: Instinctual (Gut/Body), Feeling (Heart), and Thinking (Head).
