The Nine Paths
The 9 Enneagram Types
& Their Body Wisdom
Each type carries extraordinary gifts and a specific wound. Somatic work helps you meet your full self, reducing charge around the wound and freeing the gifts from distortion.
Type 8
The Challenger
Gift
Powerful, protective, and radically direct. Eights tend to move through the world with a force that clears space for truth.
Challenge
Vulnerability compulsively hidden behind strength. The body armors against being controlled or harmed, even when no threat is present.
The felt sense of power and intensity lead to "shooting from the hip" and impulsive forward movement, covering over any tenderness.
Type 9
The Peacemaker
Gift
Receptive, inclusive, and profoundly steady. Nines often hold space for all sides and bring genuine harmony wherever they go.
Challenge
Merging with others' agendas while losing the thread of their own desires. The body can go to sleep to keep the peace.
Comfort-seeking leads to numbness, dulling sensations in the body and muting the emotional range in favor of an even-keeled inner experience.
Type 1
The Reformer
Gift
Discernment, integrity, and the fierce desire to make things right. Ones often bring principled clarity to any room they enter.
Challenge
The inner critic can be relentless. The body may hold tension from constantly measuring reality against an ideal.
Anger is often held in the body as tightness, a constricted chest, or the clenching of the jaw to keep any inappropriate expression concealed.
Type 2
The Helper
Gift
Attuned, warm, and deeply relational. Twos tend to sense what others need before they even recognize it themselves, then show up to help out.
Challenge
Giving from depletion and losing the thread of their own needs. The body can forget to receive.
Emotion moves through the chest outward, with a fullness that swells when acknowledged and deflates when unappreciated.
Type 3
The Achiever
Gift
Adaptable, inspiring, and radically capable. Threes can move mountains with their vision and can-do momentum.
Challenge
Performing at the expense of being. The body may stay in perpetual motion to avoid the stillness that invites feeling.
Emotion can be bypassed in favor of tasks and forward momentum. Getting in touch with personal emotion takes intentional practice.
Type 4
The Individualist
Gift
Deep feeling, authentic self-expression, and a willingness to enter what others avoid. Fours are often poets of the soul.
Challenge
The longing for what is missing can overshadow the fullness of what is present. The body may ache with yearning.
Emotional waves move through the whole body and can get stuck in the soler plexus, unable to complete the cycle or find release.
Type 5
The Investigator
Gift
Perceptive, synthesizing, and brilliantly clear-minded. Fives often see what others miss and bring depth where others stay surface.
Challenge
Retreating into the mind to avoid the vulnerability of full presence. The body can feel like an inconvenience.
Energy gathers in the head, with limited sensation below the neck. Fear of scarcity perpetuates grasping and unrest.
Type 6
The Loyalist
Gift
Trustworthy, courageous, and fiercely devoted. Sixes typically bring loyalty and perceptive awareness of what could go wrong — and how to prepare.
Challenge
Anxiety that scans for threat, even in safe spaces. The nervous system can learn to expect the worst.
Hypervigilance and chronic alertness to the external world keeps attention outward, avoiding awareness of the terror living in the belly.
Type 7
The Enthusiast
Gift
Joyful, imaginative, and generative. Sevens often bring creative energy and an infectious delight in possibility.
Challenge
Running from pain into the next thing. The mind can stay light and agile, while any unpleasant feelings and experiences get ignored.
Physical restlessness is perpetuated by endless ideas and options. Discomfort is unappealing and therefore avoided, keeping any fears out of sight and out of mind, but hidden in the body.
